Hi Friends!
Welcome to Birds! Instead of making a New Year's resolution for the whole year of 2020, I decided with my friend Anne to pick a theme to focus on for each month of the year. My theme for April is birds. This may seem funny for those who know me because part of my profession is being an ornithologist. Don't I already know all there is to know about birds from all those years of schooling and seasons of bird field work?? The answer is a big fat HECK NO. There are 10,000+ of these suckers (peckers, warblers, tits, etc.) in the world and 600+ species in California alone.
Even though I can identify a good portion of bird species in California by sight and sound, I still have trouble remembering their migratory pathways and pulling out enough fun facts about each one. I created this site on April 5th, 2020 as a way for me to dig deeper this month on my local bird species while I shelter in place (to flatten the COVID-19 infection/hospitalization curve) and then share those treasures of feathery knowledge with my bird-curious and birdologist compadres.
Most days I'll be birding in my backyard and the country road I'm fortunate to live on and then I'll pick a species to dig deeper on each week. I'll share info on at least four bird species local to Petaluma, California this month and we'll see how it goes from there.
Thanks for visiting and learning with me.
